We decided to participate in the City of Roseville's Cash For Grass program. The city is paying us to swap grass for a more water efficient yard. We chose to put in bark, a rock creek, and eventually plants.
Here is a before from November, when we took a 'this is your first house' picture for Rylan's baby book.
Phase 1 - Killing off the grass and whacking it down to nothing, and digging a rock creek. Most of the work took place a little at a time over many days and unfortunately we didn't get any pictures of it.
Phase 2 - Delivery and placement of bark and rock. We randomly picked Memorial Day weekend to do all this work, as it just happened to be the next weekend after all our prep work was completed. Fortunately for us the weather was very cool, almost raining at one point. Perfect weather for work and having a baby hang outside with you.
We spent Saturday grading the area, putting weed paper under the rock creek and deer paper in the rest of the area to t-r-y and discourage the squirrels from hiding their nuts. After the paper was placed we filled out the creek with rocks, including a row of rocks at the bottom to help encourage drainage to the street. This was followed by shoveling the dirt and making mounds in the shape of the island of Santorini in the rest of the area.
Sunday we shoveled the bark on top of the dirt, and filled in the existing bark close to the house. The bark was lighter so this part went MUCH faster! 5" of bark seemed like SOOO much, but it was required by the city to allow for settling.
